Prague Spring
What did Prague Spring do
USSR, Poland, and E. Germany performed Military exercises on the border as a threat.
USSR threatened sanctions against Czech.
USSR tried to limit the changes through meetings with Czech leaders.
Finally the USSR w/5 other communist countries
invade Czech. But meet no resistance. 72 died.
USSR’s Leader, Leonid Brezhnev, was asked to put a stop to these ideas from Czech. So they would not spread to other countries (Poland, E. Germany)
USSR demotes Dubcek and tries to erase him from documented history.
USSR Response
All Communist countries must be part of the Warsaw Pact and only have 1 party=Communist Party.
why did Prague Spring
A time when intellectuals and the media began to criticize the Communist Party for failing Czechoslovakia.
Ideas began to spread about allowing another Political Party to compete with the Communist Party.
Czechoslovakia had gotten a new Leader Alexander Dubcek who felt Communism needed to change
Hungarian Revolt
What did Hungary do
Hungarians demanded a new leader.
They demanded withdraw from Warsaw Pact and to be neutral in Cold War.
Students protested in the streets
USSR Response
2 weeks of fighting killed 3,000 Hungarians
200,000 Hungarians fled to Austria to escape violence.
1,000’s of soldiers and tanks rolled into the capital Budapest.
Imre Nagy and leaders were imprisoned and killed
Khrushchev was going to remove the army and allow a popular Hungarian leader take over, but he could not allow Hungary to leave the Warsaw Pact.
Why did Hungary Hate USSR
they feared the secret police
They disliked the Soviet army living in their country
Catholic Church had been banned.
Standard of living was declining. USSR was taking food and goods back to USSR.
They had no more freedom of speech.
