Intrinsic muscles of the thoracic wall
Serratus posterior superior
Origin:
Nuchal ligament, spinous processes of C7-T3 vertbrae
Insertion:
Superior borders of 2nd-4th ribs
Action:
Proprioception-elevates ribs
Innervation:
2nd-5th intercostal nerves
Serratus posterior inferior
Origin:
Spinous processes of T11-L2 vertbrae
Insertion:
Inferior borders of 8th-12th ribs near their angles
Action:
Prorioception-depresses ribs
Innervation:
Anterior rami of T9-T12 thoracic spinal nerves
Levator costarum
Action:
Elevates ribs
Innervation
: Posterior primary rami of C8-T11
Origin:
Transverse processes of C7-T11
Insertion:
subjacent ribs between tubercle and angle
External intercostal
Action:
Elevate ribs during forced inspiration
Innervation:
Intercostal nerve
Origin:
Inferior border of ribs
Insertion
: Superior border of ribs
Internal intercostal
Origin:
Inferior border of ribs
Insertion
: Superior border of ribs below
Action:
Weakly assist to depress ribs and possible proprioception
Innervation:
Intercostal nerve
Innermost intercostal
Origin
: Inferior border of ribs
Insertion:
Superior border of ribs below
Action:
Interosseous part: Depresses ribs
Interchondral part: elevates ribs during active (forced) respiration
Innvervation:
Intercostal nerves
Subcostal
Origin
:Internal surface of lower ribs near their angles
Insertion:
Superior borders of 2nd or 3rd ribs below
Action
: Act in the same manner as internal intercostal muscles
Innervation
: Intercostal nerves
Transversus Thoracis
Origin
: Posterior surface of lower sternum
Insertion
: Internal surface of costal cartilages 2-6
Action:
Weakly assist to depress ribs and possible proprioception
Innervation:
Intercostal nerve
