Society is not always what it seems.
Mrs. Dubose
died clean after fighting with addiction for most of her adult life
Strong, brave woman
"I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. . . . She was the bravest person I ever knew." (pg. 149)
"mean old lady"
Boo Radley
"Story Book" monster
gives blanket to Scout
leaves small presents for Scout and Jem in the tree
shy, gentle, deadly person
easily stabs Bob Ewell to protect Jem and Scout
Mayella Ewell
should have been grateful to Tom Robinson for being her only friend
"Tom Robinson was probably the only person who was ever decent to her." (pg. 257)
nothing but a self-centered, hateful person, who couldn't live with the "guilt" of trying to kiss a black man
Tried to be clean and tidy in her environment (living in the city dump with the rest of the unclean Ewells)
Scout Finch
one would think she's just a rowdy tomboy, but she is an intellectual child with a fondness for books
Scout will defend her father with everything she has and follows his word as law
Atticus Finch
Deadest shot in Maycomb
"With movements so swift they seemed almost simultaneous, Atticus's hand yanked a ball-tipped lever as he brought the gun to his shoulder. The rifle cracked." (pg. 127)
killed the rabid dog Tim Johnson
a well respected man, following both the law and his own morals
Defends Tom Robinson, even though he was forced to and knowing that, no matter how much evidence he has, he can't same Tom
Mr. Dolphus Raymond
everyone stays away from him because he drink from a bag and smells like alcohol
He's only drinking soda, and says that people assume he's drinking alcohol because that's what they want to believe.
"Dill released the straws and grinned, 'Scout, it's nothing but Coca-Cola.'" (pg. 267)
Calpurnia
acts proper and educated when she's in the Finch household, but when she goes to her church, she uses improper grammar
Tom Robinson
Seems like an unruly, uncultured person at first glance (in the eyes of the Maycombians)
Knows that he won't be able to walk away from the trial with his freedom intact, even though there is no evidence against him and substantial evidence against the prosecutor's father
"His left arm was fully twelve inches shorter than his right and hung dead at his side. It ended in a small shriveled hand, and from as far away as the balcony I could see that it was no use to him" (pg. 248)
This evidence shows that it was physically impossible for Tom Robinson to hurt Mayella Ewell according to the nature of her injuries.
Is actually a respectful person, kind and wary of the status difference between him and his prosecutor during the trial
Aunt Alexandra
Proper and cold; sticks to the traditional ideals of women needing to be dainty
in her own way, worries about Scout and what kind of woman she'll become (if she continues to act out without the help of a mother figure)
really does love her brother; tries to help him raise his kids, in her own way
"I mean this town. They're perfectly willing to let him [Atticus] do what they're too afraid to do themselves - it might lose 'em a nickle. They're perfectly willing to let him wreck his health doing what they're afraid to do . . ." (pg. 316)
Alexandra worries constantly about her brother's health and, from this passage, that she really hates the community of Maycomb because they're letting Atticus fight their battles.
Little Chuck Little
Described as a small, innocent-looking child
polite and well mannered to Miss Caroline
was completely unafraid of pulling a knife on Burris Ewell
"Little Chuck's right hand went to his pocket. 'Watch your step, Burris,' he said. 'I'd soon as kill you as look at you. . .' Burris seemed to be afraid of a child half his height . . ." (pg. 37)
