Advantages and Disadvantages of Interpersonal Relationships
Advantages
Lessen loneliness
Make you feel like someone cares for you and likes/loves you
Enhances self esteem and self worth
This is very true for me personally as being around my close friends makes me feel more comfortable and them wanting to be around me makes me feel a lot better if I'm low on self esteem one day.
Enhances mental health
Without close relationships you're more likely to become depressed because of loneliness and low self esteem - which are two advantages listed above. Having these close interpersonal relationships improves your overall mental health.
Talking about fortunes and misfortunes with friends makes you feel better.
Talking about bad things that happened to you can make you feel about those things. An example of this could also be a therapist.
Talking about good things that happened to you can enhance that feeling of happiness
Securing of Stimulation
Intellectual, Physical, and Emotional stimulation can be gained through Human Contact
Even imagined relationships, although dangerous territory, can be beneficial as well. It's better than no relationship.
Disadvantages
Puts uncomfortable pressure on you to expose vulnerabilities
More obligations to attend to
May prevent you from developing other relationships
This is something I used to struggle with. When I'd get super close to someone, I'd only want to talk to that person. Now though, I have grown and don't feel limited to one person.
They can be hard to end if things appear bad
They may hurt me
