Union soldiers had food rations of slated pork, dried fruit, potatoes, molasses, peas, beans, rice, salt and vinegar. The Confederate soldiers got food rations of bacon, cornmeal, vegetables, tobacco, molasses and rice.
The northern soldiers were given tents, blankets, sutler stores, packages from home with baked goods, new socks and shirts and hygiene products and more food for supplies.The southern soldiers didn't get tents or blankets and they got less food.
The uniforms for the unions were wool, blue and good quality. The uniforms for the south were jean cloth, bad quality and they were tan. The south were nicknamed "butternuts" because of their uniforms.
Most soldiers from both sides died for sickness and disease.
All soldiers spent their free time doing things like reading, writing letters and playing card games.
