Civil War
Leaders that helped end slavery
Frederick Douglas wrote newspapers like the north star to help end slavery
Harriet Beecher Stove wrote the book called Uncle Tom's Cabin which showed the harsh reality of slavery.
John brown was a guy that led an attack so slavery could have weapons and start a rebellion to try to end slavery
Harriet Tubman which was the conductor of the underground railroad and let a lot of slaves to freedom.
Abraham Lincoln who made the Emancipation Proclamation which led a lot of slaves to freedom
Robert G. Shaw was the leader of the 54th regiment. The 54th regiment was the first all African American fight at Fort Wagner.
All of these leaders were a big part of the civil war and it led to the civil war because more people started to follow them when they wrote their books, newspapers, etc. and once more people joined them the non- abolitionist were not liking it.
Comparing North vs. South
Major Cities- The north had 17 major cities and the south had 4 major cities.
Farms- The north didn't have much farmland, they about equivalent as 350 football fields. They farmed wheat and a little bit of tobacco. They did not need as much man power in the north. The south had about 1,000 football fields of farmland. They farmed tobacco, cotton, and sugar cane. Which lead to needing a lot of man power.
Slave vs Free population- The north had 3 times as much free population than the south. The south only had 1/3 free population. The south had a lot more slaves than the north did.
Railroads- The north had 70% of the railroad and the South had 30% of the railroads.
These all impacted the war because the north had mostly all of it, the major cities, railroads, free population. The only thing the south had was farmland which needed slaves and slave population that was greater than the norths.
Eli Whitney
Eli was the inventor of the cotton gin. The cotton gin in the south made it so they needed more man power. So what that means is that the plantation owners need more slaves. So the slave population increased greatly in the south.
Industrialization is the process of developing industries in workshops and factories.
The norths economy was based off of manufacturing and commerce
Industrialization caused the Civil War because the north had 5 times as much factories than the south did. The south needed more slaves to plant and harvest cotton, but the north was anti- slavery and the north was getting all the cotton from the south from the slavery plantations.
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves in the confederate states and now they are able to fight in war.
Freeing the slaves in the confederate states was a military decision and Abraham Lincoln could do it because the was the head of the chief in the military. Slaves were rebelling and he couldn't free the north because he would need congress to pass it and the north wasn't rebelling
This would impact slaves in the south because they would feel like they have a whole new life ahead of them.
This would impact people in the north because they might be able to reunite with some of their family members that have dragged into slavery even if they weren't slaves.
Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise explained that Missouri is a slave state. Maine is a free state. Anything entering the Union above the MO compromise line is free and anything below is a slave state.
The MO compromise impacted the civil war because the north and the south both wanted power in congress.
Kansas- Nebraska Act
This explains that any state entering would have to enter with popular sovereignty. That means that the people would vote if that state would be a slave state or a free state.
This would have impacted the civil war because people don't want to vote for the state to be slave or free. Also slaves couldn't vote for this either.
Underground Railroad
The Underground railroad is a route were runaway slaves could go to search for freedom. Harriet Tubman was the conductor of the underground railroad. A conductor a person that runs the whole underground railroad. Pilots are a big help with this to because they went to the south to help runaway slaves.
This was a cause of civil war because so many people were getting mad at abolitionist and people helping slaves get to freedom.
Gettysburg Adress
Abraham Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address. In the address it states that the north and south are now fighting in a war against each other. The soldiers that have fought here, made this place holy. They should die for a reason and not be in vain when they do so.
This impacted the Civil war because it was a piece of paper showing that it doesn't matter if you were white or African American you still fought in wars and have a reason to be here.
Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive slave act was any runway slave in the north would have to go back to their owners in the south.
This impacted runaway slaves because if they are seeking freedom it will be harder because they will more likely to be caught.
This impacted slave owners because mostly every runaway slave that they had would come back to them.
This impacted free slaves because even if you free, slave owners to come and claim that you were one of their slaves, even if you were free.
This impacted police officers because they got promotions and raises if they found runaway slaves.
This impacted slaves because it will be harder for them to escape now.
Food rations
The north had a lot more rations of food then the south soldiers. The south had food like bacon, fried fruit, rice, molasses, etc. The north had food like pork, rice, vegetables, dried fruit, etc.
Free Time
Both the North and South soldiers in their free time wrote letters to their families, played card games, played sports like football.
Supplies
The North better known as the Yankees (nickname) had 2 pieces of canvas to use for shelter, rubber blankets, and sutler stores. Sutler stores are connivence stores which have daily Necessities in them. The South had no sutlers stores, they depended on their families, friends, people back home to send them they things they needed. Since the north had so much other supplies it lead to the south stealing them so they could use them.
Death
A lot of soldiers died of disease and sickness before the war.
The outcome of the war
The north won the war. The south surrendered because the north was blocking their way to get supplies. So Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant made a deal and that was the soldiers got to keep their private horses, some of their personal belongings, and they were fed. Ulysses S. Grant was the general for the Union and Robert E. Lee was the general for the Confederate.
Geography impacting the civil war
The south had good farm land and good soil along with it. The north got most of their crops from the south. With the south having good farmland they needed slaves to work in them. The north didn't have that much farmland/ good farmland so they don't need slaves like the south does.
Uniforms
The north wore blue cotton uniforms. The south wore grey- tan itchy uniforms. The north made fun of the south and called them butternuts because of the color of their uniforms.
