Symbols/ Motifs
Mockingbirds
Mockingbirds represent the innocence in TKAM. Several characters in the book represent mockingbirds because the lost their innocence in some way based on their experiences explained above.
Examples: When Tom Robinson was shoot, Mr.Underwood compared it to killing a bunch of song birds.
Mrs. Maudie explains to Scout it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because the only thing they do is sing.
Connection: Scout and Jem's Last name is Finch. A finch is a small bird. This means that since they are Finches, they are vulnerable to the town of Maycomb.
The Mad Dog
The dog represents Atticus's opponent. All the things he is battling at the moment which include mobs, injustice, and his reputation.
Boo Radley
Boo Radley represents misconceptions. Misconceptions never do good. some misconceptions are never realized.
Examples: Examples: in the beginning of the boo, Boo Radley was portrayed as a monster. The kids were afraid of his home, They would even have nightmares at night. In the end when they were saved by him, all their thoughts changed. They realized they were wrong. He becomes human to Scout
