LOAD

They are the forces that act on a structure.

Types

Fixed or permanent loads

They always affect the structure in the same way.

Variable loads

They are occasional or changeable.

STRESSES

Forces that can deform a body

The tension varies depending on...

Loads acts on the bodies, causing internal tensions. This tensions are called stresses.

...the characteristics of loads: intensity direction, trajectory and point of aplication.

...the shape of the objets bearing the loads.

Types

Traction

A struture is a set of elements in a body that are intended to resist the forses that act on it. A struture prevents a body from breaking or becoming too deformed.

Forces try to stretch the object they are acting upon.

Bending

Forces try to bend a body

Compression

Torsion

Shear or cutting

Forces try to flatten or compress a body

Forces try to twist a body

Forces act like two scissor blades and like when we hit an object to the edge of a table to try break it. Also called tensile stress.
