Defence Mechanisms
-
-
Regression - reverting to earlier times when faced with threat. I.e. lets throw paint at him (when angry).
-
-
-
-
Rationalisation - justifying guilty feelings. I.e. someone is being critical as they're just trying to help us.
They are used when the Ego cannot satisfy the desired of the Id, the mind uses Defence Mechanisms. These are unconscious strategies used to cope with anxiety and maintain positive self-worth.
For example, if the teacher is being mean, you may displace your feelings onto a friend.

Theory of Personality
Id - there at birth. It is the most basic human instinct and everything we inherit. It works through the pleasure principle whereby it looks for immediate gratification. If it cannot meet it's needs, then it will imagine them (dreams). It includes are current wants and needs.
Ego - As the child grows and develops their ego will develop too. This follows the reality principle - at the same time as wanting to meet it's needs, it has to consider reality. I.e. a child wanting chocolate, but knowing that they will get told off. It acts to balance the Id and the Superego (Id wants it but SE makes us feel guilty for wanting it), however, since it develops before the Superego, it has to learn to develop alone and logically plan to achieve goals. Tries to meet the requirements of the Id.
Superego - the moral watchdog. It cannot develop until we have reasonable language and understanding of the morality in our culture. The child develops their values from their parents. It is made up of 2 parts; the Ego Ideal (everything we are rewarded for) and the conscience (everything we have been punished for). Concerned with social dimensions and following rules. I.e. you cannot have it as it's not right.
