Earth - longitude and latitude
Latitude
Imaginary line drawn parallel to equator
Angular distance of the point north/ south of the equator
Parallel = line connecting all points having same latitude
Called parallel bcz it is parallel to all lines of latitude
Zero degree parallel is equator
There are total 181 latitude including equator
Each parallel of latitude is a circle but they are not equal
Equator is the greatest circle
Great circle is largest circle
Represents the circumference of that's sphere
Each Meridian makes a semi great circle
Arc - Always the shortest route between the points
Distance between two parallels of latitude is always equal
Longitude
Angular distance of a given point East/ west of the Prime Meridian
Meridian - line connecting places having the same longitude
Distance between two meridians not equal
At equator - 1 Deg= 111 km, 30 deg N/S= 96.5 km
360 meridians of longitude
zero deg = Prime Meridian = passing through Royal observatory at Greenwich London
Each meridian Is a semicircle
180 degree meridian = international date line - exactly opposite zero degree meridian = antipodal points
Earth divided = 24 longitudinal zones,15 deg= 1 hrs/ 1 Deg= 4 mins
Latitudinal zones
Equatorial region - 0 - 10 N & S
Tropical region -23 ½ N - 23 ½ S
Subtropical region - 23 ½ - 40 N & S
Temperate region - 23 ½ - 66 ½ N & S
Polar region - areas around the pole
Sub polar region - areas at Higher latitudes
Circle of illumination
Sun illuminates one half of the earth at the moment
It is edge of the sunlit hemisphere,Is a great circle
Divides Earth into light half and Dark half
