1.3 Secondary Storage
Why do we need Secondary Storage
Remember that the user has no access to RAM or ROM memory (only the CPU)
We need a long-term storage solution - somewhere to put the OS, software and data
Without secondary storage we would....
Software would need to be installed each time we wanted to use it
yeah
You wouldn't be able to save any files, images, video etc
Not be able to access new data or software again later
Common Storage Technologies
Optical
Solid State
Magnetic
Magnetic Storage
Uses a disk (or tape) coated in magnetic material
Material is polarised either North(1) / South (0)
Stores data in binary form
Hard Disk Drives commonly use magnetic storage
Optical Storage
Uses a reflective surface
Some areas reflect laser light
(1) while some areas don't (0)
Stores data in binary form
CD-ROMs use optical storage
Solid State Storage
Uses a semi-conductor material which can act like billions of tiny switches
A switch is either open (1) or closed (0)
Stores data in binary form
Solid state drives use solid state storage
