Assessments
Diagnostic A pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine individual's strengths and weaknesses, knowledge and skills before instruction begins. It is used to guide the lesson or curriculum planning. This is an assessment FOR learning, because it aids teachers in creating an appropriate lesson for student levels.
Advantages- Allows teacher to plan meaningful and effective instruction and information for individualized instruction and creates a baseline for assessing future learning Disadvantages It can take time away from learning and could cause a teacher to make incorrect judgement of a students ability
-
Formative- Formal and informal testing conducted by teachers during a lesson to help teacher decide if they need to modify their lesson or individualize it. This assessment is OF learning because it tells the teacher if the students are understanding the current concepts.
Advantages - They are typically quick, they tell a teacher what they need to know in a timely manner, they aren't graded which removes stress from students
Disadvantages- Students may not take it seriously since it is not graded, Teachers have to sacrifice some time during a lesson to stop and do a formative assessment
Example- Exit Card after a lesson or Thumbs up/Thumbs Down during a lesson are both examples of Formative Assessments
Summative- Measures a Students Achievement or knowledge at the end of a lesson. This is an assessment FROM learning, it lets the teacher know if the student understands what they have just learned from the lesson.
Advantages- They can provide motivation for students to pay attention in a lesson. It can quickly let the teacher know which students understood and which need more help on a lesson. Disadvantages- They take some time to plan and administer,They may not always be the most accurate
-
Performance Based- This type of assessment measures a students ability to apply the skills they have learned in a unit by "proving" they know how to apply it. This is an assessment both FOR and OF learning because it shows the teacher if the students knows the material and it also gives students the chance to learn as they perform.
Advantages-- Allows teachers to pinpoint their studnents strengths and weaknesses, it shows the teacher what skills and knowledge the student have learned and shows their abilities.
Disadvantages-- It can cost time due to the preparations it can also be more of a subjective test with no REAL right or wrong answers
Example- Students would have to write a story or a poem with rhyming words to prove they know what a rhyming word is and how to use it.
High-Stakes- A test that has major consequences if you do not do well on or fail. It is a single defined assessment and it is clear on who passes or fails. This is an assessment OF learning because it is used to show if you know the material or not.
Advantages-Tests are based on clear defined standards and can provide important information on student growth and decline.
Disadvantages- It could make teachers omit information that is not on test, it may not be accurate of what students really know, there is a lot of pressure for teachers and students.
-
Portfolio- A collection of coursework kept all together to be used to compare start to end work, or used to pass on to a parent of future teacher. This type can be graded or used as only a tool for teachers.
This type of Assessment is OF learning because it is a collection of all the students coursework showing their abilities.
Advantages- - Allows teachers to see student improvement over an long period of time, it can be used to pass on to help the next years teacher or to show parents what they have learned.
Disadvantages- This type of test can be very subjective, it can be very time consuming for teachers to put together and to add to, teachers can get lost in the purpose of the portfolios, you need a clear direction and purpose if using.
Example- Teacher will collect all the students workshop papers and drawings throughout the year to see how they improved throughout the year in their spelling, drawing and writing skills.
Authentic- A test where students have to present a real world task to prove they know and understand what they have learned. This is an assessment FROM learning because the students are demonstrating and using what they know to further their learning
Advantages-Allows students to demonstrate their work to an "authentic" audience. Students are able to actively participate in learning rather than passively listening to a lesson. Disadvantages-Difficult to administer, especially with a large number of students
Example Doing a science experiment about rocks and minerals to show they understand different types and what they are used for
Peer Assessment- Students grade each others tests based on a teachers benchmark. This is an assessment OF learning because it tells the teacher by their grade whether the students does or doesn't understand material.
Advantages- Saves teachers times and it can help students get to know the material better by seeing it an extra time
Disadvantages- Students could purposely give unfair grades based on a number of circumstances, Teachers have to spend a little classroom time doing this and explaining the process to students. It can also make student embarrassed or incompetent if they didn't get a good grade.
Example- Having Students pass their spelling tests to another student and we grade them together in class
Self Assessment - Students evaluate or grade their own work. This is an Assessment both FOR and OF learning because students can use this as a learning tool and it can also help teachers plan or prepare appropriate lessons or work based on assessment outcomes
Advantages- Can save time for teachers, and students can identify their own strengths and weaknesses.
Disadvantages- Students could manipulate the results to give themselves a better grade, it can take time from lessons
Example- - Students grade a pre-test for spelling so they know which words they still need to study for the real test
-
Example-Pretest before a unit so you can see what you need to teach, what you can omit and which students may need a little extra help, it can also help determine grouping
