product / service design
design - is finding the right balance between creating a product or service that people desire to have, that they can afford to buy and that works reliably
the design mix
when considering the design of a product or service designers tend to consider the following three factors.
aesthetics - the look, feel, smell or taste of the product
-
economic manufacture - product should have a simple and effective design meaning it isn't expensive to manufacture. it must be cost-effective
-
-
-
sustainability - means that the purchase you make will not affect long-term suppliers of the product. e.g. planting a tree for every one you fell
-
recycling - waste materials can be disposed of in one of three ways: burn them, bury them or reuse them. recycling is important as a way to help us achieve sustainable development
ethical sourcing
the ethical sourcing forum has been operating since 2002 to try to give western companies an idea about the reality of working conditions and practices in different parts of the world
ethical means taking moral values into consideration, an ethical firm is one that takes its moral values seriously.
due to several embarrassments on the media, Company Directors are very wary of bad publicity. for ethical sourcing it is better to assume sourcing based on fear of ethical revelations. ex. Primark using child labour to produce their products and sell them cheaply = this is not ethical.
