There are a number of inherent stressors associated with extreme environments, such as hostile climates, cramped living spaces, lack of available life support, and limited communication with the outside world (Sandal, 2000) Despite these challenges, there is a growing body of literature that suggests exposure to stress as result of operating in extreme environmental conditions can manifest in adaptive psychological responses and personal growth.
