on the job training: advantages: you are able to learn whilst you are working.
disadvantages: may lead to stress and work overload
off the job training: pros: come back with new expertise and skills to offer and no mistakes affect real customers.
cons: have to train somewhere else may be difficult around commitments and lifestyles
new vacancies:
may occur as someone leaves, demand increases or customer needs change. when someone leaves, it is not always set in stone that the business has to replace this person - technology may be a better investment
internal or external recruitment:
internal: involves filling a job vacancy by selecting a person who is already employed in the organisation
external: filling a vacancy by someone who is not employed.
selection methods:
- past jobs + experiences
- narrowing down selections [shortlisting]
- performing research to ensure that you are getting the right person for the job
training:
employees are taught new skills or improve skills that they have. a business may need to train because:
- changes in the law for health and safety
- if an employee is promoted to a new position
- business policy / objectives change, ex. a new approach to addressing customer complaints
