- - - - produces leukocytes and antibodies, destroys old RBC, destroys thrombocytes, and filters metabolites and wastes from body tissues
  - - - atrophies after puberty and is replaced by fat and connective tissue
        
        function early in life= produce antibodies and manufacture lymphocytes to fight infection
  - - - 3 types:
        
        palatine
        
        on each side of soft palate
        
        pharyngeal
        
        AKA adenoids in nasopharynx
        
        lingual
        
        on back of tongue
- - - - most common form= lymphoma
- - - - made up of water, digested nutrients, salts, hormones, oxygen, carbon dioxide, lymphocytes, and metabolic wastes
  - - - small, open ended lymph vessels that act like a drainpipe (lymphatic capillaries)
        
        pick up lymph at tissue when lymph will travel through capillaries to larger lymphatic vessels
        
        contraction of skeletal muscle allows lymph to move
  - - - small, round or oval masses ranging from size of pinhead to almond
        
        lymph brought to node by lymphatic vessels where node filters the lymph and removes carbon, cancer cells, pathogens, and dead blood cells
    - - after lymph is clean and purified, it leaves the node by a single lymphatic vessel and moves on to join larger vessels where it is later drained into one of the lymphatic ducts
        
        two types of ducts
        
        right thoracic duct: short tube that receives all purified lymph from right side of head and neck, right chest, and right arm
        
        empties into right subclavian vein and returns clean lymph to blood
        
        thoracic duct: much larger and drains rest of body
        
        empties into left subclavian vein
        
        at start of duct there is a pouchlike structure called cisterna chyli
        
        storage area for purified lymph
