Indian Classical Music

Structure
First beat is called the Sam. The tala starts on the Sam, and all other musicians play together on each Sam. The piece ends on a Sam as well
Mainly improvised, therefore performances of the same raga or tala may sound completely different form one another
Piece Composition
The Alap: Begins performance. Performer introduces the notes of the Raga and improvises freely around them. No tala, only tambura drone
The Job: Some rhythm or pause is introduced, with some structure to the piece instead of just improvising

The Gat (or Bandish if singer is present): Tabla is introduced and a fixed composition is played, with improvisation sparingly used. Call and response is utilised as well

Pair of drums: the small, high pitched Dayan; and the large, low pitched Bayan

Tala: indicates a pattern of beats to follow. Number of beats could be over 100 depending on the tala
