CHEMISTRY UNIT 12 - THE EARTH & ITS ATMOSPHERE
Evolution of Atmosphere
Phase 2 - Oceans, Algae & Plants absorb CO2
Lots of CO2 removed from early atmos as it dissolved in the oceans & went through series of reactions to form carbonate precipitates that formed sediments on seabed
Later marine animals evolved & their shells & skeletons contained some of these carbonates from the oceans

Composition of Present Day Atmosphere
-
1% other gases e.g. CO2, noble gases & water vapour
-
Greenhouse Effect
-
-
Greenhouse gases like CO2, methane & water vapour like insulating layer in Earth's atmos - allowing Earth to be warm enough to support life
-

-
Major Sources of Carbon Monoxide, Sulfur Dioxide & Oxides of Nitrogen
