1832 Reform act
Equalised the size of constituencies

In 1838 the people's charter was drawn up
In 1839 the chartist petition was presented at parliament with 1.25 million signatures
It said:
All men should be allowed to vote
Voting should take place by a secret ballot
There should be an election every year
Constituencies should be of equal size
Members of parliament should be paid
Members of parliament should not have to own property
The petition was rejected by parliament leading to unrest. As was a second petition signed by 3 million people
A third petition was tried and failed, and the chartist movement died down. 5 of the 6 request were fulfilled by 1918.

In 1900, they believed that parliament was going to give the vote to women and so stopped campaigning
In 1897 the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) was formed
The impacts of the First World War
As men went to war, women stepped up to fill the gaps in the workforce
To some this proved women's' worth and that they could preform the same jobs as men.
