What would be the best way to fit a museum visit into your curriculum?
HOW TO PREPARE
prepare yourself well
visit the museum/exhibition by yourself, more than once
participate in special teacher training programmes and previews, most museums offer these for permanent and special exhibitions
identify cross-curricular topics
colaborate with teachers from other subjects
define clear learning goals
get a clear picture of the pre-knowledge and existing experiences of your class (some kids might visit museums on a regular base, others not)
actively involve class in preparing the visit
planning the travel options
preparing topics and content e.g. with online research, library tasks, ...
writing reports for a blog, schools website, newspaper, journal, ...
HOW TO FOLLOW UP
with yourself/colleagues
critically assess the expected outcome, the actual outcome, organizational aspects etc.
repeat museum visits as often as you can, make visits to museums a regular part of your classroom and learning culture
with your pupils
save knowledge transfer (quizzes, reports, ...)
recreate objects, activities e.g. visit to a pottery museum - doing pottery in a follow-up school project, make an exhibition with the childrens' artwork
let children write about the visit (creative writing, writing reports for blog, school website, school or museum publications)
