The Commonwealth and Oliver Cromwell
Even though the king was dead many Royalists kept hopes up for this son to become king.
They were then sought for and murdered.
Oliver Cromwell created the New Model Army and used it to destroy Irish Royalists and the Scottish, who crowned Charles King at the battle of Worcester.
Oliver the Lord Protector of England.
Once all the threats to the throne were 'dealt with' Oliver Cromwell selfishly named himself the Lord Protector and ruler of England for only five years until he passed in the year 1658.
He did often argue with parliament and dissolve them, much like Charles, but, had a much stronger army.
In 1655 there was of course a Royalist revolt or uprising in England. So he took some measures.
He made sure to keep good watch on his people.
He was able to divide his country into 11 districts ruled by 11 different major-generals.
He implemented many Puritan values over England to try and get rid of the Catholic ones.
Lastly he shut down inns, playhouses but also banned public traditions such as ear-baiting, maypole dancing, being drunk, gambling and even playing sports.
Life with Cromwell as the monarch was terrible. Or was it?
Everybody despised the army of Cromwell.
Puritan lifestyle was dull and boring.
Fasting replaced Christmas and Easter celebrations.
Many aspects got better.
He allowed people to worship most religions.
More people got richer as he let maritime shipment thrive. With sugar and slaves.
When Cromwell passed Charles the first was allowed back from France to become king. This made many people happy again.
