Hazardous Environments
Key Terms
Hazard - an event resulting from environmental processes that threatens or actually causes damage and destruction to people, their property and settlements
-
-
-
Human response - The readiness and ability of people in an area to absorb ad recover from the effects of a neutral hazard
-
Earthquakes, Global distribution
-
-
Characteristics
-
-
The amount of damage caused by the earthquake depends on the depth on the focus and the type of the focus and the type of rock
-
-
Volcanoes, Global distribution
-
-
Characteristics
-
-
Lava flows destroys everything they move over, but they rarely extend for more then 10 Km from the volcanoes
Ash can be carried for hundreds of miles in the atmosphere close to a volcano where the ash is at its thickest

Tropical storms
distribution of tropical storms rarely happens in winter as the ocean must be of a temperature of 27 degrees for s tropical storm to form
Causes
- Warm moist air rises and condenses, releasing huge amounts of energy. This powers the storm
- As the air rises it sucks in more warm moist air behind it
- The air spirals upwards rapidly, which then causes high winds
- the water vapour in the air condenses as it rises and cools, forming huge clouds and heavy rain
- The cool and dry air falls in the centre of the storm
Characteristics
-
They lose strength on land because there is no sea to be evaporated into the storm so it can be powered
-
The eyeball or vortex surrounds the eye . Here the air is rapidly spiralling upwards causing high wind between 55 and 118km/h
