What students expect from lecturers
Voss and Gruber (2006)
Knowledgeable, well-organised, encouraging, helpful, sympathetic, caring to students' individual needs (Hill et.al, 2003)
1st year students desire good teaching skills, approachable, knowledgeable, enthusiastic and organised (Sander et.al, 2000)
Enthusiastic about their subject, inspiring, knowledgeable and helpful (Lammers and Murphy (2002)
Charisma (Shevlin et. al, 2000)
They found what students want from survey -> Charisma, leadership and teaching effectiveness are rated higher than teaching ability
Caring, enthusiastic and interest in the students' progress (Andreson, 2000)
Should be flexible enough to explain things in different ways
Treat students as individuals
Friendly, patient and fair graders
Reliability - (McElwee and Redman 1993)
Lecturers should turn up to classes on time and keep records of student performance
Teachers should be able to communicate it clearly to their students
Open to suggestions, criticism and questions
Competent lecturers know their subject are willing to answer questions, approachable and have a sense of humor (Brown, 2004)
Money, Nixon, Tracy, Hennessy, Ball and Dinning (2017)
Interaction inside and beyond the classrooms
Formality and rigidity (based on their 12 years of experiences)
Lectures worth their investment of money
Guidance to available services (Less from the 2nd year)
Brown (2004)
Students' characteristics can affect their expectations to lecturers, e.g., organised vs spontaneous
friendliness or approachability (willingness to answer quesetions) may not be enough
A way to answer question has an impact -> Supportive / flexible enough to match their needs
Nabaho, Oonyu, Aguti (2017)
