The Atmosphere
Uses of Carbon Dioxide
Refrigeration
At temperatures below -78^C carbon dioxide forms a solid called dry ice. It is ideal for cooling substances as it is much cooler than ice and does not melt into a liquid hence the name dry ice
Stage effects
When water is added to dry ice it produces thick dense clouds of water vapour which are used in special effects
-
Fire extinguishers
Carbon dioxide does not support combustion and is more dense than air. This cuts off the oxygen supply to fires
-
Gases in the Air
Three gases
Nitrogen 78%
-
-
If nitrogen gas is cooled to almost -200^C it condenses to a liquid and is used to freeze things quickly
Oxygen 21%
As we have already discovered, oxygen makes up approximately one-fifth of air
Almost all of the oxygen which is used in industry is obtained by cooling air until it turns into a liquid and then distilling it off
Argon, Carbon dioxide and Water vapour 1%
