Preferred Activity Time (PAT)
incentive system that rewards:
on-task behavior
good efforts
cooperation
responsibility
respect
Tool for teaching and rewarding:
returning homework and permissions slips
getting your dawdlers and procrastinators to hurry up
smooth transitions
How it works
begins with a gift
primary students can be 5 minutes
grades 4-6 can start with 10 minutes
less mature students should get PAT twice a week
teacher's job is to
catch students being responsible and on task and reward them with bonus time
or observe them wasting time and being off task and give time penalties
students control the penalties by their decisions to cooperate or not cooperate
Awarding bonuses
hurry up bonuses
awarded when need students to hustle and complete assigned work in timely manner
given for handling important transitions for the day
transitions can include entering or exiting class appropriately, shifting from large-group instruction to independent seat work, etc.
automatic bonuses
cant also be awarded for handling important transitions
unexpected bonuses
anytime you catch students being responsible, on task, or making special effort to cooperate
example
Mrs. Ladd challenges student to beat timer
asks them to do three things
first, put away math books
next, quickly and quietly put away manipulatives
third, grab independent worksheets and go back to seats
as she explains directions writes math books, manipulatives, and independent work on board
then asks students to raise hands if can explain all three directions
calls on students and praises after they list directions
challenges students to do it in under 2 minutes, reminds to look at board if forget
praises verbally for getting good at transitions and tells them to pat themselves on back
recording penalties
maintain neutral tone and use timer to record off task time
always on lookout for bonus opportunities to offset penalties
no shaming, blaming, criticizing, or sarcastic comments
when we threaten with further loss of time, we risk damaging positive incentive system
use in small group
while working in back, let students know they can earnpoints by not interrupting you.
Teacher-Student game
teacher gets point when students:
blurt out
disrupt
leave their seats
dawdle
distract others
students receive point
points determined by teacher, not allowed to ask
if students earn more than teacher, earn preferred activity at end of class
introducing PAT
do it on first day of school
PAT will provide us all with more time to play together and have fun!
