Why you want to do PhD?
- Research - since I started my research activity in 3rd undergraduate year, I've noticed how my progress accelerated because I started to use the knowledge I just gained. I've found out that science is not a couple of genius, answering the questions I never can understand, but hard and consistent work of answering and asking questions, of self-education. Research, as I now understand what it is, is something I want to devote my life to.
- Academia - I want to become a professor someday, I like teaching and science. I understand how many times you heard that from PhD candidate. During PhD I will understand what else I need to be except teacher and scientist. If I find out that I will be a mediocre professor, that is fine, I will go to industry or to commertial science, but I must try. That is why I need a PhD.
You like your UNI, why don't stay there?
- I am from Kazakhstan - PhD salary in Russia is 100 Euro per month. Most of the PhD students apply for research grant for young scientists to Reseach Funds. The bad thing is - international students cannot apply there, so even if I wanted to stay here, I am not sure could put all my efforts to research as I would have to work somewhere else. And this is not a good idea.
But you worked on RRD, didn't you?
Yes, I was an engineer. I can never be a teamlead, even if the idea of reseach will be mine.
- Lack of equipment - Even in frames of my thesis, I was tired of waiting for months to receive a simple chemical or scanning electron microscopy results. I had to send my samples back in Kazakhstan to receive a Raman. Yes, I learnt how to work despite such circumstances, but I am sure, I can be more productive in more equiped establishent.
My questions
- How typical are collaborations between groups? And do students participate in conferences during PhD?
- The contract is for 3 years. Do the most of students finish PhD on time?
- Obviously, a research center in Julich is very well equipped, Does the equipment renovates from time to time? And is there problems with chemicals or consumables for the experiments?
