There was opposition to the movement. Phyllis Schlafly set up Stop Taking Our Privileges (STOP) as opposition to the progressive women movement, being a pro-family, conservative organisations. It was originally called Eagle when it was conceived in 1967. She argued that ERA would remove the privileges the that housewives enjoyed, like exemption from the army, and the fact that poorer women who wanted to be housewives would be disadvantaged. Her campaign convinced enough states to not ratify the amendment, leaving only 30 states ratifying it, and it is still not passed to the day
