Innocence
The title "To kill a mockingbird"
The mockingbird represent innocence
"Mockingbirds don't do one thing but to make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's gardens, don't nest in corncobs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us."(Harper lee, page, 93)
The trial
Atticus represents innocence
Mr. Cunningham follows Atticus and starts to think for himself
People should think for themselves
Tom Robinson represents the mockingbird and Mr. Youl represents the one killing the mockingbird
Mr. Youl accuses Tom Robinson of abusing and raping Mayella
Injustice is created against the innocent by using society
People like Mr. Youl create injustice for the innocent and also try to hurt the innocent
This is seen in the trial when he puts the blame on Tom Robinson to cover up his tracks and he chooses to blame Tom Robinson.
Mr. Youl tries to kill Jem and scout
Society makes people think one certain type of way creating stereotypes, making people biased about certain things, having people judging other people even before meeting them.
"Inside the house lived a malevolent phantom."(Harper lee, page, 9)
Racism
Innocent poeple have to try harder than others
It makes people think superior or inferior of others
"There's four kind of folks in the world. There's the ordinary kind like us and the neighbors, there's the kind like the Cunninghams out in the woods, the kind like the Ewells down at the dump, and the Negroes."(Harper lee, page, 230)
It makes things unfair
"When it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins."(Harper lee, page 224)
Boo Radley
He is an innocent man who has been wrongfully accused by society to be a violent and dangerous man
Left gifts for Jem and Scout in the tree
Saved Jem and Scout from Mr. Youl
