Subject
The speaker has clearly lost her lover (death or break-up), and she no longer believe what they’ve been trying to convince herself of as she has been writing – this is a disaster.
The speaker presents an ironic, and at first almost humorous depiction of losing things, suggesting that it is a skill which can be practised and perfected.
The things being lost get increasingly important, as if losing small things is good practice for losing the big things.
However, in the final stanza we see proof that these can’t prepare you for great loses.
Tone
however, in the final stanza we see this is all just hiding true feelings of chaos and upset at the loss of her lover.
