        The Trescott's were originally held with high regard in the town because of Dr. Trescott and his ability to care for individuals within the town
        
        Class distinction is lost because of disagreement with majority opinion.

        "My feeling is that prospective employers are put off by the fact that I was a lowly Verisimiltude Inspector for nine years with no promotions" (143)
        
        "That's basically how i finally moved up from the Verisimilitude Inspector to Special Assistant, by lifting 1800s ideas up from the McKinnons"
        
        Not much of the social structure is explained in Civilwarland in Bad Decline, but we get an idea that there is a social hierarchy that does prevent you from getting certain positions.

        "Under my window, a clean rasping sound when the spade sinks into gravelly ground" "By God, the old man could handle a spade. Just like his old man."
        
        The Narrator looks down on the father literally and metaphorically, as the father carries out the manual work. The narrator disassociates from the father, while they sit up in their room with a pen in hand. The poem talks about class structure and how the work of the intellectual believes them self to be above physical labor.
      - Those Winter Sundays
        
        "Sundays too my father got up early and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold, then with cracked hands that ached from labor in the weekday weather made banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him."
        
        "Those Winter Sundays" does not provide an image of a multi-class society that the reader can obtain a picture of. The reader does see however the struggle of manual labor and the lack of utilities that the family has as a result of it. In the morning the child would fear the chronic angers of the house and frustrations that the father has concerning their well-being. The low-paying working class job that the father presumably has, leads to the families social and economic struggles.
    - - The Handmaid's Tale
        
        Society is divided into multiple classes from the beginning. The commanders, the guardians, the aunts, angels, wives, econowives, handmaids, and Marthas.
        
        Importance of the class in hierarchical chain is not determined by importance of work, but rather who is providing services to who, and whether or not you can provide an added value to society.

        "Princes, the dregs of their dull race; who flow Through public scorn, - mud from a muddy spring;"
        
        Rulers do not gain power from how well they do their job, but position at birth. #
  - - - "The reason for her keeping them for so long was that they were not trash. They were good country people." (pag 3).
        
        Mrs. Hopewell divides the world into three groups/classes of people she can trust: lower class, people that can be hired, trash, and good country people
      - "Aren't you," she murmured, "aren't you just good country people?"
        
        Hulga divides her world into individuals who can be trusted/manipulated, good country people, and people whom she cannot.
- - - - Hulga throughout the novel characterizes individuals based upon their intellect, and organizes them into groups based upon their perceived IQ
      - "Nome. He's the one that goes ot chiropractor school"
        
        One of the men Mrs. Freeman's daughter dates is a chiropractor with a nice car. This furthers the separation of individuals of society into different groups based upon intellect.
    - - "the Old Master: how well they understood its human position"
        
        In this poem the world is divided into those that know and understand the placement of human loss in the world and those that do not. Using the word master elevates these individuals into a position above the rest with their understanding of the human condition.

        Before the fire Henry was held in high esteem in the town.
      - Frankenstein
        
        "Victor sees that Elizabeth’s beauty is the reason people love her. Yet this seems to be the reason he loves her himself."

        Io held great great beauty and was forced to have sex with Zeus. But because of Zeus' lust for her, she suffered in the end, and was cast out and is "driven from place to place" (683-684)
    - - Frankenstein
        
        "A flash of lightning illuminated the object, and discovered its shape plainly to me; its gigantic stature, and the deformity of its aspect more hideous than belongs to humanity, instantly informed me that it was the wretch, the filthy daemon, to whom I had given life."
        
        The monster is isolated from society because of appearance. This isolation only results in death and destruction for Frankenstein and society who will not give the monster what he wants, a family.
      - The Monster
        
        Henry was treated as if he were a monster after his act of heroism. He lost everything, and became a circus act in the barn loft to the other children. He went from respectable, to saint, to villain.
  - - - The town disassociates with the Trescotts after taking in Henry.
      - The town of Whilomville accepts Henry and approves of him when he performs his assigned duty and acts heroicaly. This approval all goes away however when he becomes deformed and looks inhuman.
    - - Prometheus saves humanity by giving them fire, and allows humans to flourish. But, as a result, Prometheus became a "god suffering at the hands of gods" (93-94)
      - Hephaestus performs his duty for Zeus and is thanked for it. In contrast to Prometheus performing his duty to humanity.
    - - Individuals in society receive an elevated status if they fulfill their duty, and perform the action that is required, moving them away from otherness. An example is when the handmaid's give birth so many times, they are never sent to the colonies.
  - - - Women become an object of humor as they are thrown aside and continue to perish by the hands of the monster and other men throughout the novel.

        "because white men can't police their imagination, black men are dying"
      - Power
        
        "I didn't notice the size nor nothing else only the color"
  - - - ""I see you have no family Bible in your parlor, I see that is the one lack you got!" Mrs. Hopewell could not say, "My daughter is an atheist and won't let me keep the bible in the parlor." She said, stiffening slightly, "I keep my Bible by my bedside"" (pag 278)
        
        Society in the south is divided between those that have religion and those that do not. Mrs. Hopewell is hurt that she is perceived to lack faith, and is missing an integral part of societal culture.
