Data Analysis
Central Tendancy
Mode
To find the MODE you take some numbers like 3 8 4 8 7 8 4 8, then order them from least to greatest, and then find the number that is there the most :star:
Median
To find the Median you have to put all of the numbers in order and then get the middle number and that's your median. Example: 2,3.6,4,0=0,2,3,4,6=3. You use the MEDIAN when there are no big gaps in the data.
Mean
To find the Mean you must add up all of your numbers and then divide them by the number of addends. 2, 4, 6= 2+4+6=12/3=4
M.A.D.
A MAD is the Mean Absolute Deviation. M.A.D. of a data set is the average distance between each data value and the mean.
7,12,8 mean:9 2,3,1 MAD:6
1) find the mean of the data set. 2) find the difference between the mean and each data point. 3) find the mean of the differences.
Line plots
Mary found the average temperature of SC and put it in a line plot.
Line plots are another way to organize large groups of numbers. They're organized on number lines and can be arranged in mean mode and median.
Range
Carrie's mom got the ages of her daughter's friends. 12,13,12 and 11. To get the range she subtracted 13-11. So the range is 2
Range is the difference between the highest and lowest value in a group of numbers. You subtract the smallest number from the largest.
Statistical Questions
Example: How many adults went into the pizzeria during the year?
Statistical Questions are never supposed to be specific.
Histograms
A Histogram is used when you group numbers together like in a bar graph but the bars are touching and the numbers are in a range.
Box and Whisker
Plots
With a Box and Whisker Plot you put the Median in the middle and then put the dots above
