- - - - Portia is disguises herself as Balthazar, a lawyer, ad she goes to Venice to help Antonio. She is intelligent and brave and she speaks forcefully and eloquently of mercy in court.
        At the end of the play she gives Antonio a letter showing that some of his ships and money were safe all along.
    - - Portia loves Bassanio and she is happy when Bassanio chooses the correct casket.
        She gives him a ring as a token of her love and she says that if he loses it or gives it away, their love will be over.
    - - In court Portia says to Shylock that he will take a pound of flesh from Antonio but no blood. Shylock finally asks for money instead of the pound of flesh but Portia refuses to let him change the bond. Then she enacts an ancient Venetian law and she accuses Shylock of threatening Antonio. So Shylock loses all his wealth and Portia saves Antonio's life.
