Meningitis
Steroids - Ceftriaxone causes bacteriolysis of pneumococcus, releasing inflammatory cell wall products that exacerbate meningeal inflammation. In rabbits, steroid pre-treatment blocks this surge in inflammation (Lutsar 2003). Clinically, dexamethasone pre-treatment of bacterial meningitis reduces neurologic complications, an effect which seems to be driven largely by the subset of patients with pneumococcal meningitis (De Gans 2002).
