functionalist view on family
murdock - the nuclear family is the most important. other institutions could do it but it would be easier if family did
reproduction, economy, education and stability of the sex drive. they need a partner to limit the free for all effect in the sex drive.
but people still have affairs, the economy may not be stable, only focus on positive.
families should have shared views and beliefs to work together top achieve a goal. should also socialise the young to share those values

Parsons functional fit - that the family type that s most popular is because of society at the time
from extended to nuclear - need for geographical mobile workforce, need social mobility, growth of wealth, growth of meritocracy, need to avoid conflict caused by different status in one family.
