BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Comes from the Greek word baptizo, meaning to dip or to dunk.
-
The roots of baptism go back to Jesus' lifetime, his cousin John the Baptist baptised Jesus which was an event which exposed Jesus' special relationship with God and marked the start of his public ministry.
Baptism is seen as a spiritual and physical event as Jesus says 'no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the spirit'.
Jesus gave instruction to his disciples after his death to continue to bring people into the religious movement he started through baptism.
Christian practices concerning baptism are mainly based on biblical passages, leading to different viewpoints.
