Chapter 2 Biology Notes
Cell organelles
nucleus
- the control centre of the cell.
- usually the largest organelles in a cell.
- has a double membrane and many pores.
nucleous
- located in the nucleus
- produces rRNA.
mitochondria
- the cell's energy suppler.
- is the site of cellular respiration.
- double membrane - inner membrane has several folds.
lysosomes
- the cells disposal system.
- only in eukaryotes.
Cell organelles cont.
rough ER
- covered in ribosomes.
- transports proteins made by ribosomes.
- responsible for intracellular transport.
smooth ER
- no ribosomes.
- transports lipids and hormones.
- independent of RER.
-
preoxisomes
- break down sites in the cell.
Cell organelles cont.
golgi complex
- packages, stores and transports proteins, hormones, etc.
- adds carbohydrates to proteins to make glycoproteins.
vesicles
- membrane bound 'bubbles' that are used for storage and transport.
ribosomes
- can be self standing or bound to ER.
- site of protein synthesis.
- creates proteins.
centriole
- spindle fibers formed for cell division.
-
