The Hindenburg Line
Was the Hindenburg line and metaphorical line or a wall?- the Hindenburg line was neither, it was a three-fold line of German trenches, with Germany heavily defending them.
Who made the first advance- The Allies and their huge artillery barrages advanced onto the Germans heavily defended protected defences September 18 1918. Using 8 tanks (and dummy tanks to distract Germans) they broke through Germany's first line of positions and took 4,300 prisoners. Germany lost more troops.
This is a photo from the first Allies troops advancing on Germany. from this photo the gap between each side is rather far, and not many troops can be seen advancing, there is even one standing around, the Germans mustn't have known about the advance, or i think there would have been more troops being much busier.
who's land was the Hindenburg line 'built'?- the Hindenburg line was built long Germany's fortification lines, because of this, the Germans had first pick of their fighting ground, this left the Allies at a disadvantage with them usually on lower ground or in areas pron to stagnation.
Were there trenches or other defensive strategies?- Germans uses under and above ground bunkers, but both used trenches as a form of defence, Germany being more prepared however with a three fold trench system.
Who retreated, or ended the fighting along the Hindenburg line?- the Allies advanced to victory by sending tanks onto the Hindenburg line.
