Current Outlook
D/HH students are currently underachieving compared to their hearing peers.
The majority of mainstream teachers are inadequately teaching D/HH students.
95% of D/HH students attend mainstream schools.
Bilingual Programme
Objective is to develop primary and secondary languages for the D/HH student (English & NZSL)
Inclusive Approach: All students and teachers must be involved to create a society based on differences.
Assessment of needs is crucial to understanding how the D/HH student best communicates and how to best implement strategies for the child.
Family involvement is crucial to understand what the educational goals are for the student.
Strategies of a Bilingual Programme
Work with the NZSL interpreter when planning lessons ensure adequate time for the interpreter to prepare language.
Pre and Post Teaching: Cover content with the D/HH student before the lesson and review it after it has been taught.
Ensure the D/HH student is given adequate time to process information.
If the child is wearing a cochlear implant make sure that the background noise is kept to a minimum.
