The Anti Doping lab recieves around 7,000 to 8,000 samples every two years
The samples are freezed and then put into a special machine to be analyzed
There are always 2 samples. 1 that is tested immediately and the other that is used as a spare.
They want to maintain integrity in sport
The individual sports are the ones that usaully have the most doping cases
How did the Russians get past the testing for PEDS
?
The New York times states that the Russians made a hole in the wall where all the sample were being held and they would put there hand through the wall and swap out the urine samples and the Sochi Olympic games.
47 Russian athletes were denied into the 2018 Olympics this year.
They made sure that every single one of them was tested. This was a lot more strict and intense then in other countries because of the recent uproar. The IOC ( International Olympics Committee ) only cleared 271 athletes. Meaning 118 tested positive for a banned substance,
This means that the 47 people all took PEDs
The IOC ( international Olympic committee ) banned Russia from showing there flag and playing there national anthem at the 2018 Olympics.
They had to wear what is called a "neutral" uniform that had no evidence of the Russian flag colors.
The Russian doping scandal blew up at the Sochi 2014 Olympic games
In January of 2016 the IAAF ( International Association of Athletics Federation ) have a lifetime ban to the former head of the Russian athletics federation.
How do testing for Performance enhancing drugs impact the sport itself as well as societies?
Taking steroids can also cost a person his or her job
Ex. If they start behaving unexpectedly and work they could get fired. This could leave a family in bad financial problems.
A steroid user could potentially harm someone around them due to high aggression
Depression usually starts after the person has stopped taking steroids
Ex. Steroids can cause depression and aggression which can really affect a family's relationship
A study based in Sweden shows that people that have used steroids are most likely to have been convicted for a criminal offence.
The reason the Russians cheated at the 2014 games is that they wanted dominance in their home country. This shows that the pressure from citizens and pressure to succeed affects an athletes or even a whole country chance to takes PEDs or not.
What do organizations do in order to test for PEDS?
You are not allowed to deny a test
The testing specialists are trained to detect weird behavior.
Most anti doping organizations come up with a plan prior to a big competition. They try and make sure that they have everything in order for the next comp.
Different organizations have different strategies.
Testing is a very important part of an anti- doping drugs organization
Organizations give athletes 12 hours to pick a time to get tested
Over 3,100 athletes were tested at the 2018 Olympics. This shows that there are rules put in place in order to make the process of testing smooth and faster.
