Gender prejudice and discrimination
Definitions
Gender discrimination
Turns
prejudice into action
and affects how people treat others,
treating others differently because of their gender
Gender prejudice
The
assumption that men or women should behave in a particular way because of their gender
, built on stereotypes
Catholic teaching on gender discrimination
C. Church:
discrimination can prevent people from developing their God given talent
, can hurt those being discriminated against- make them feel
less worth and value
Widespread discrimination can affect a
whole society
2015 P. Francis spoke about women being paid less than women: "Why is it expected that women must earn less than men. no!
They have the same rights.
The disparity is a pure scandal"-Sums up Churches attitude to gender discrimination,
not acceptable to treat men and women diff. in same situation
C. Church championed rights of women in home and family, workplace and society.
Believes women should be entitled to fulfill primary role in society- as
mothers who bring children up safely
. Role
should not be taken from them for political or financial reasons
All societies should support role of women in role regard and also allow working women the full opportunity to do so
Rights of men should be protected too- teaches should be
'objective equality'
(no distinction should be made between sexes in any particular situation
Doesn't
believe men and women should be treated identically, unless a situation requires this- men ans women have own role that must be respected, eg. priesthood
Can also be
positive discrimination
- people who have been previously discriminated against given preferential treatment. Eg having to employ people from ethnic minorities to overcome prejudice in workplace
Gender discrimination in Britain today
Gender discrimination has been
illegal since 1975
On average women are
still paid less than men
,women make up half the work force but men hold higher proportion of senior positions
Many in Britain today would disagree with C teaching that men and women should fulfill diff. roles.
Would argue not allowing women to become priests is a form of
gender discrimination
