This lesson helped the students build knowledge of people and places
Helped students gain respect and appreciation for their own culture as well as others cultures

Terry took on the role of a democratic citizen in a diverse society by bringing up his concern to the mayor
He went above and beyond what was expected of him
"Madison Elementary Students Illustrate, Translate Book about Ho-Chunk Culture"
This project helped the students gain social understanding of the past and the people of their hometown
"When Students Have a Space to Talk About their Cultures"
The students were able to learn about their culture, as well as other cultures that maybe their classmates are or they know somebody that is that culture

Madisyn developed civic efficacy, she saw an issue and spoke up about it, just as an active citizen should do
This also showed her knowledge of people in the Muncie community. She saw that many people in the Muncie community were not accurately represented

Everyone needs to see the differences in culture as something valuable not detrimental
Color is there but there needs to be respect and knowledge about it

The lesson allowed the students to take control of their own learning and apply their family and background to their flag that they were creating

Madisyn took control of her learning, wondering why there were not figurines that looked like her
She felt that the story was not correct since she is a part of the Muncie community and she was not represented

The students used the culture kits to take control of their own learning
Even students who did not normally speak out in class, began sharing their ideas
Social studies is so powerful that it engages everyone into the content, especially when it is hands on and exciting to the students
It allows students to take control of their own learning
Students' can see their work have an impact on the community and the world around them
The students can apply their knowledge to everyday life

Teachers cannot be colorblind, they need to appreciate and use the different cultures of their students to benefit their learning

The teacher made connections from what Madisyn said to the real world
The teacher created an environment that made her students comfortable to share ideas like Madisyn's and know that they would be respected

Gracie became an active citizen in her community with her toy drive
She was making connections with others who were helping her develop the toy drive, as well as the children and their families in the hospital

The students make connections with each other on their similiarites
The students wanted to get to know each other and learn about their classmates

The students were able to share about their culture
Student participation even from students who do not normally participate was very high

Madisyn became an active citizen in her community
She took this as an opportunity to better her community by having them accurately represent her culture
