Foil
A foil is another character in a story who contrasts with the main character, usually to highlight one of his/her attributes.
This character is made to be a direct comparisons to the other character in order to make his/her differences clear to the reader.

Coming of Age Novel
A type of novel where the protagonist is initiated into adulthood through knowledge, experience, or both, often by a process of disappointment. Understanding comes after, in some way, the loss of innocence.
