DNS: Domain Name System

A DNS server is used whenever a user inputs an URL into their address bar. At this point, a DNS resolver will access the DNS server and search for the IP address attached to the URL and ping it back to the user so they can view the website or device they’re trying to access. If the DNS resolver can’t find the correlating information on one server, it will move down the DNS server hierarchy, looking for the information it needs to resolve the address.
