IBEC theme F Wealth and Poverty
Wealth Inequality
In the UK, the poorest 50% own 8.7% of the UK's wealth, whereas the richest 10% own 45%
Poverty - Not having enough resources to meet your basic needs
Poverty is often caused by things like low wages, high costs, a lack of skills and unemployment
Worldwide poverty is also caused by things such as war, rapid population growth, natural disasters and exploitation
Fair-trade Foundation - Works to ensure people in developing countries are paid a fair price for the products they sell and that they have decent working conditions
Problems with poverty
Human Trafficking
People in poverty are more vulnerable to human trafficking
People are forced to work for little or no money after being transferred to a new place that is often abroad
People are persuaded and often go willingly after being promised a better life
Traffickers force them to work in order to pay back the money owed for the move
Interest
People sometimes need extra money so they’d take out a loan
Money lenders are a way of getting loans quickly and easily but they often have very high interest rates
Even if people take small loans out they often become so big that they can’t repay them
The government introduced regulations so that people don’t have to repay more than twice what they borrowed
Fair pay
Many people in poverty have low paying jobs so they have to work long hours
People have to be payed the National Minimum Wage but many think it isn’t enough
People over 25 must be paid the National Living Wage which is slightly higher than the minimum wage but some say it is not enough to live off of
Businesses are reluctant to pay people more as it is expensive, some even try avoiding paying the minimum wage
Some say if wages are increased, businesses won’t be able to pay everyone so jobs wouldn’t be cut
Difficulty with solutions
When helping poverty caused by disasters it often involves emergency relief and can take years to bring things back to normal
Giving money to people in poverty may make them too reliant on it
They may not help themselves out of poverty as they prefer having money given to them
Some say people should get themselves out of poverty by being more responsible with money and working harder
Some say poverty comes about even if someone is working hard
Society should help those that are facing problems like illness or lack of skills and opportunities
Christian uses of money
People shouldn't be fixated on their wealth
"You cannot serve both God and Money"
People with lots of wealth should use it to help others who are less well off
Money should only be earnt morally, not doing things like working for an arms creation company
The Church have promoted credit unions which lend money at low interest rates, they also educate people on money matters in order to go against people who have high interest rates
Islam uses of money
Money shouldn't be used in ways that harm others
Profiting from alcohol or sex is forbidden
"Allah ... has forbidden interest"
People who charge interest will go to hell
Money doesn't have an inherent value so it shouldn't be used to make more money
Muslims use islamic bank accounts and run business that don't charge interest
Christian Charity
Giving to charity is important as it helps people so they can help themselves
Parable of the talents - teaches those who make the most of what they have are rewarded
"If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother os sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person"
"when you give to the needy, do it without trumpets"
How much you give isn't important it is important you give as much as you can
Islam Charity
Zakah is one of the five pillars of Islam
"righteousness is in one who gives Zakah"
2.5% of your yearly wealth is given to charity unless you are below minimum threshold
Wealth is given by Allah so they should use it to help others
Sadaqh is another type of charity, it also includes charitable acts such as smiling at someone if they are upset, it is up to the person to decide how much they do
There is an emphasis on ongoing charity, charity that will have a lasting effect
There are charities like Muslim Aid and Islamic Aid, which help people worldwide
