Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia
Etiology
Chronic lung disease affecting premature newborns and infants
Pathophysiology
Pathogenesis: Lung immaturity, respiratory failure, oxygen supplementation, and positive-pressure mechanical ventilation
Inflammation, fibrosis, and impaired development of the infant lung.
Clinical Signs and Symptoms
Chronic lung infections
Difficulty/labored breathing
Cyanosis
Poor growth and development
Wheezing
Diagnosis
Based off of patient conditions and clinical findings
Differential diagnostics
CXR, Labs, and any other tests that can rule out other conditions
Respiratory management
Medications: Bronchodilators and corticosteroids
Supplimental oxygen to maintain SpO2 > 90%
Diuretics to reduce fluid buildup in the lungs
