How does it affect our health
Disease
Water Pollution means there is more prevalence of water-borne diseases such as diarrhea. Water pollution also affects the healthiness of our crops.
Air Pollution attributes to many diseases, and there is a much higher risk towards cardiovascular and Respiratory systems of those who live in areas with poor air quality. 80% of people however now live in regions that exceed the World Health Organisations air quality guidelines
Nutritional
An increase in prepackaged foods means less of an intake of antioxidants and omega 3. These nutrients provide protection against inflammation and other risks that are increased because of air pollution
Medicinal
Increase in hospitalisations in areas where there is a high density of air pollution
What responsibilities do we have?
What is already being done?
Some Governments have introduced legislation to reduce the carbon emissions of factories, or stopping dumping of waste.
Some cities, especially in Europe, have pedestrian or car-free zones, where people have to use bicycles or take the public transport. In Copenhagen, for example, more than half the population ride bikes to work.
Some places have implemented a carbon tax, a carbon tax is a tax which is imposed based on the number of fossil fuels which are burnt. This is meant to target big factories that burn a lot of fossil fuels.
What you can do?
Stop using a car, travel using a bike or by walking. However this isn't always possible, however using public transport is also a better option
If a lot of people chip in with small changes such as these, it will make a massive difference. The lead cause of air pollution is from transportation, and walking somewhere can make a difference
Be energy efficient, don't waste energy, and use renewable energy sources such as solar energy or wind power
If a lot of people chip in with small changes such as these, it will make a massive difference. The lead cause of air pollution is from transportation, and walking somewhere can make a difference
Use environmentally friendly cleaning products, as the phosphorus in detergents and other cleaning products which can end up in bodies of water attribute to water pollution
If a lot of people chip in with small changes such as these, it will make a massive difference. The lead cause of air pollution is from transportation, and walking somewhere can make a difference
What can be done?
Australia and the rest of the world are falling behind Europe with the innovation of car-free zones etc. Australia needs to implement something to reduce the number of cars, whether this be through upgrading public transport, which is pretty poor in some places or adopting some 'car-free zones' or something of the sort from a European country
The government could implement carbon taxes or more regulations on the industries that create the pollution. They can also improve public transport, and increase regulations regarding waste that is contributing to water polluition.
How does it affect biodiversity?
Water Pollution
Oil Spills
12% of the oil that comes into the ocean is via oil Spills. Oil spill are localised and have catastrophic effects on marine life
Boat & Marine Transportation
Oil doesn't dissolve in water and is catastrophic to marine life, most oil that pollutes the water is from Boat and Marine Transportation.
Sewerage and Waste
Rubbish, Sewerage and Waste is either dumped or runs into the sea, this pollutes the water and makes the water unlivable for plants, animals and fish. Freshwater is also viable to have rubbish and waste either run into, or being dumped into to
Air Pollution
Burning of Fossil Fuels from factories and Transportation
Air pollution and the burning of Fossil Fuels attributes to Climate Change. Climate change has made the climate hotter and the weather more chaotic. This affects animals and their habitats, especially those such as fish who need to live in a certain temperature and wont be able to adapt to the change
Air pollution can also cause weather phenomenon such as acid rain, we as humans have protection and shelter which can help us in these scenarios however animals have no such protection
Noise Pollution
Artificial Noise created by Traffic, Machinery etc.
Some Animals require noise to see. Or to locate things such as mates, predators, or food. Noise pollution can also affect animals ability to hear. This is especially harmful towards birds and bats, as well as many other animals that rely on their hearing.
Soil Contamination
Pesticides
Pesticides sprayed on crops and plants being grown has an effect on many animals, and their habitats
Pesticides are often washed off and run to a local water source and contribute to water pollution
