Stake Holders- Geography 2!
Geologist-
Against
Some geologists have warned that damming up too much water in the reservoir carries a heightened risk of landslides, earthquakes and prolonged damage to the river's ecology.
landslides caused by increased pressure on the surrounding land
A landslide is any geologic process in which gravity causes rock, soil to move down a slope. Several things can trigger landslides, including the slow weathering of rocks as well as soil erosion
Dam built on eq zone- weight of water backed up behind reservoir has increased danger of eqs and landslides
Environmentalists
Against
All environmental cons reasons on sheet 1
Many Environmentalist could also agree with 3 gd so look at pro environments also!

Historic monuments and temples have been lost due to flooding ect
Many Traditional cullltures and ancestral roots have been lost
Relocated people have complained about inadequate compensations, a shortage of jobs and corruption that robbed them of money they were entitled to.
Some people who were promised $4,000 a head only received $1,000 after money was deducted for moving, down payments on the new homes, and variety of other fees. Other people received no compensation or explanation of what happened to their mone
Farmers (relocated)
mass relocation of 1.3 million will lead to lower quality life for those accepting migrants due to overpopulation and also for farmers since soil isnt as fertile in other areas as it was near the river banks.
This means lower chance of producing good-quality crops
Also many farmers have moved to higher ground where they are sharing tiny pices of land
Which means reduced economic productivity
By estimates fertile land used to grow 40 percent of China's grain and 70 percent if its rice will affected by the Three Gorges project. Beijing says that about 74,000 acres of farmland, including fertile land near the river, will be lost to the reservoir while 37,000 acres of new land will put under cultivation. Environmentalists say that 240,000 acres will be lost.
Archaeologists
Against
When dam was built, over 1000 archaeologogical sites were submerged lost
Many species were endangered and the baiji was extinct and these animals could help archaologists to find clues
Chinese Government
Dam's are there to provide power to our ever-growing cities
Puts country ahead and we can show the world what we are capable of
Economy becomes stronger as they have enough energy, jobs
Trade along the river will also improve
It will protect 10 million people from flooding. So far 300,000 people have died in past 3 years
The Three Gorges Dam is one of the greatest engineering feats in the history of the world. It is sure to draw a significant number of tourists, with many subsequent economic benefits.
Ship owners
Presence of ship locks have allowed larger ships to travel up/downstream.
So the dam has helped water levels rise meaning the deeper water can support larger ships..
Therefore Ship owners will be able to transport goods from Chongqing for example to larger cities such as Shanghai.
Hydro-power energy companies & Clean-energy advocates

Water collected to generate hydro-electric power which is Harnessing the power of water in the cheapest form of energy
It's a clean fuel source that is renewable yearly by snow and rainfall. Hydropower is also readily available
it won't pollute the air like power plants that burn fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas. Hydroelectric power is a domestic source of energy
Teenage villager
Opportunity for jobs in new areas like industrial towns such as Chongqiung
