Disabilities Chapter Terms
Exceptional Students
Students who require some form of modification to the standard educational program
Special Education
Instruction that is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of students who are recognized as exceptional students
Individualized Education Program (IEP)
A plan for meeting the educational needs of an individual student who may have disabilities
Mainstreaming
Placing a disabled student in a regular school classroom
Inclusion
The practice of assigning students with below normal or above normal IQ's or disabling conditions to the same classrooms they would be in if they were not disabled
Full inclusion
The strategy of including students who may have exceptionalities in with the population of all students in classes and activities
Resource classroom
A classroom staffed with a special education teacher or teachers, equipped and managed to meet the needs of students with exceptionalities according to their IEP's
Learning disability
A disorder that interferes with the learning process
Response to Intervention
A method used for the early identification of students who may have special needs that employs deliberate strategies to impact learning. If the student does not respond to the intervention, it may be determined that the students has a learning disability.
Dyslexia
A learning disability in which an individual has difficulty with reading comprehension and writing
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
A disorder characterized by not being able to maintain attention or to control impulses and includes increased distraction and energy/not being able to stay still
Attention deficit disorder (ADD)
A disorder characterized by not being able to maintain attention of control impulses but not accompanied by hyperactivity
Autism
A spectrum of disorders in which communication, social interactions, and the ability to participate in relationships is impaired
Assistive technology
Technology that individuals with disabilities may use to preform tasks that would otherwise be difficult or impossible
Cognitive ability
The ability to learn, know, and understand
Bell-shaped curve
The bell shaped graph of a distribution that may or may not be symmetrical
Normal curve
The symmetrical, bell-shaped curve of a normal distribution
