Speak
Isolation
Melinda
"Sometimes my mouth relaxes around Heather, if we're alone. Every time I try to talk to my parents or a teacher, I sputter or freeze up. What is wrong with me?" Melinda isolated herself because she didn't want to talk about what happened at the party, but her friends almost exiled her from their friend group, spare a few old friends and new ones. She needs to 'speak' about the party so she can move on.
Family isolated from her life. would not talk with them, even with counseling

Friends
Mr.Freeman
"You're a good kid, I think you have a lot to say. I'd like to hear it."Mr. Freeman is a supporting character in the book, and helps Melinda in art class, whether it being advice in the form of a riddle, or wanting to listen to what Melinda has to say. This helps a lot with Melinda breaking out of her isolated state, and helps her finally talk and cope.
Cares about Melinda, and thinks she is the star student
Most people after the event with Andy Evans
After Andy had attacked Melinda in the closet, she threatened him with a shard of glass, and scared him off, and after the fight, most of the girls were proud of Melinda for standing up to the guy who they found creepy and sexually aggressive
David Petrakis
David petrakis is one of the few friends Melinda has, and David is a true friend, inviting her to his pizza party, but Melinda had isolated herself from society, referenced in the quote “You do remember fun, don’t you?”
Ivy
"Someone touches my arm gently."Melinda?" It's Ivy. "Can you take the late bus? I want to show you something." Ivy is supporting character in the book, and resides in the art class, and she is one of the only friends Melinda has, and Ivy touches Melinda gently, because she believes that Andy had assaulted her, and is thinking about this when she touches her gently. This is a blooming friendship, and this quote says a lot about it

Art
Good Grades
Art is Melinda's best class, getting consistent A's and quickly becoming Mr. Freeman's favorite student
Ivy
Became decent friends with Melinda, and hangs out with her occasionally. whether it is in art or outside of school.
Bullies
Andy Evans
"Freshmeat." that's what IT whispers. Andy Evans is the main antagonist of the book and is well known to the schoolgirls as a creepy sexual predator. In this quote, Andy wants Melinda to know how dangerous and creepy he is, and she wont realize this until he tries to rape her again. During the party, Melinda had been left vulnerable to Andy because she was drunk, and Andy saw it as an opportunity to strike. I wouldn’t open myself up for this guy.
Biology Class
David Petrakis
"Come on Mel, you've gotta come with us! My dad told me to bring anyone I wanted. We can give you a ride home if you want. It'll be fun. You do remember fun, don't you?"David in this quote is asking Melinda to come to his party, but Melinda declines his request because she remembers that last time she went to a party she got sexually harassed, and David I believe is saying that Melinda should grow past these events in her life so she can lead a brighter future. David and Melinda had become friends during Biology class, she or David had opened themselves up for one another, becoming great friends
Social Class
Mr Neck
Mr. Neck was very cruel and unforgiving towards most, so most saw Mr. Neck as a mean man
Drama with David Petrakis
David stood up for the class during a discussion, when Mr. Neck wanted to shut it down , showing Mr. Neck he was is a resilient person.
Guidance Counselor
A guidance couselor is suppose to hear what you have to say, you should open yourself to these people if you have a problem.

Compassion
Mr. Freeman
Mr. Freeman is a character showing a little mercy towards Melinda, and truly cares about her, and is the only character who wants to listen about what she is bottling up inside
Ivy
Ivy is one of the few people to show a little compassion towards Melinda, and they soon find themselves becoming friends. And this little bit of compassion lead to an avalanche of recovery for Melinda, as this compassion led to her writing that message on the wall, and that message brought about the downfall of Andy, and the up rise of Melinda's self-consciousness
The importance of showing some compassion towards others.
Like the characters above, you should show some compassion every once in a while, because we are all fighting our own demons on the inside, and maybe some people could use an ear or a second opinion from time to time.
