Neurotoxicity
Types of Nerve Damage
- Neuronopathy - cells lethally injured and dies
- Axonopathy - injury to the axon
- Potential for recovery if cell body survives
- Axotomy - cutting of axon; distal axon degenerates
- Wallerian degeneration - degenerative changes in distal segment of a peripheral nerve fiber (axon and myelin) after continuity with cell body is interrupted
Wallerian-like axonal degeneration - Degeneration associated with certain chemicals and disease states

Schwann cells (layers of myelin sheath in PNS)
